Introduction to Deepfake Lawyer

by Michael

Welcome to Deepfake Lawyer! The purpose of this site is to serve as a repository and commentary on the state of American law as it pertains to “deepfakes” – that is, images or videos created using artificial intelligence to resemble the identity of a nonconsenting individual. (Definition mine).

The problems with deepfakes tend to arise from the second-to-last word in that sentence: nonconsent (though intellectual property issues often arise alongside it). Deepfakes have been used nonconsensually in a variety of harmful applications, including pornography, political misinformation and blackmail for a few years now, but legislation and case precedent on deepfakes is thin at the time of this writing. Deepfake Lawyer aims to limit the harm done to the affected individuals by empowering attorneys stepping into this new field with an easily-digestible and accessible source of information that will expand as the deepfake case law forms in the coming years.
